Le Mas di Laura | A small-scale B&B near the coast

A refined rustic style that meets all modern conveniences

Le Mas di Laura is a little piece of paradise in Ortonovo, on the border between Tuscany and Liguria, nestled in a beautiful garden of 13,000 m² and surrounded by vineyards and olive trees.

After thorough restoration where charm and beauty were not compromised, the old country house was transformed into an exclusive and intimate B&B with only three rooms. Thanks to the personal service of the owner Laura you will feel right at home in this enchanting place, away from the chaos of everyday life.

The spacious rooms are tastefully decorated in a typical Provençal style with neutral colors. Natural stone walls, wooden beds, and old furniture are enriched with refined decorations while Carrara marble adorns the private bathrooms.

Relaxing moments (and playtime) can be enjoyed in the beautiful large garden. On sunny mornings, it is possible to have breakfast outside overlooking the green hills. The pool is the ideal place to cool off or take a nap on the loungers in the sun.

More sun and sand can be found on the beaches on the Tuscan coast that you can reach by bike (bicycles are available and free of charge at the B&B). The five hamlets that form the Cinque Terre are only one hour away; here you can make spectacular walks on the coastal paths that connect the villages. Be sure to also visit the charming seaside towns of Forte dei Marmi and Portovenere as well as the authentic hilltop villages in the countryside.

Location Le Mas di Laura

Le Mas di Laura is set in the village of Ortonovo, on the border between Tuscany and Liguria. Ortonovo has a small supermarket, whereas for all other daily amenities, you can head to the town of Carrara (only 15 minutes). The B&B is a short distance away from the sea and some beautiful cultural and natural sights.

Underneath you find some tips for daytrips:

  • Visit the beautiful city of Sarzana (15 minutes). The main square Piazza Matteotti, is surrounded by many beautiful buildings, cafes, and restaurants. It is as well a good starting point to discover the small shopping streets of this medieval city outside the tourist circuit.
  • The Cinque Terre (50 minutes) is a rough part of the coast on the Italian Riviera. It is located west of the city of La Spezia and consists of five small towns: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The villages are connected by old mule paths and an excellent train network. Here you will find an incredible nature, an authentic atmosphere, small beaches, and excellent restaurants. In the summer months, this region is a very popular tourist destination and can be crowded!
  • Go to the extraordinary natural swimming pools of Malbacco at the foot of the Alpi Apuane-mountains (45 minutes’ ride). The water is cold, but offers a wonderful refreshment on warm summer days.
  • Try the most famous “lardo” (Italian bacon) of Tuscany in the hamlet of Colonnata, (25 minutes) where “lardo” has been made since Roman times. Combine this trip with a visit to the city of Carrara known for its Carrara marble, a high-quality marble that is quarried outside the city.
  • Spend a morning in Forte dei Marmi (20 minutes), a small exclusive beach resort with high-end shops, excellent restaurants, and a 5km-long promenade to stroll along. Every Wednesday, there is an open-air market. The beaches of Forte dei Marmi are long and have fine sand.
  • The Tuscan coastline offers many more gorgeous (and fully serviced) sandy beaches such as Lido di Camaiore and Viareggio (25 minutes).
  • Tellaro and Lerici are authentic villages situated on the so-called "Gulf of Poets" on the Ligurian coast. From Lerici, also leaves a boat to the Cinque Terre and Portovenere, another charming fishing village.
  • For culture and history, the iconic Italian cities of Florence (1-hour drive) Pisa or Lucca (35 minutes) are within easy reach.

Lovely B&B in a very quiet location. Hostess Laura is doing everything to make you happy. Top breakfast every morning with fresh pastries. Lovely swimming pool.

The visit to the center of Massa was surprising. Delicious eaten and experienced the tail of an open air music festival on the square. Reception was very friendly. The woman gave a good tip to go by train to Cinque Terre instead of by car to La Spezia. Golden tip!
